The Full Catastrophe: Vol 1
Book includes the gift of sight.
Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata
seek to bring the distant horizon closer
A few years ago, a DNA test changed my life.
For me, the consequence of being adopted, meant I’d lived my entire life not knowing where I came from and therefore not really knowing who I was.
An epiphany followed: if I didn’t know where I came from, how could I know where I was going?
For as long as I can remember, uncertainty saw me bounce between untethered and being deeply stuck. Settled and stuck are very different places.
As any sensible person knows, the best way to unstuck things is to blow them up. I took the matches to my safe, predictable, but small world. I blew up a 45 year long career to follow my artist’s instinct.
Written from the middle, this book documents what happens after the fuse was lit. I’ve never been much of an open book, so the irony isn’t lost on me writing one.
It’s been quite a year. Not all beer and skittles though, as you’ll find out towards the end. But beyond the safety net lies incredible opportunity.
I’ve discovered where I came from. I’ve travelled to New York to establish my art practice writing portraits, and to Kathmandu to photograph eye surgeries.
It was time spent at the Tilganga Eye Institute that touched me deeply in a way I still struggle to understand. This book is one way that my work can help theirs.
$100 from the sale of this book will go directly to the hospital in Kathmandu.
That money is enough to fund a pair of cataract surgeries for someone who can’t afford them.
So buying this book will literally help someone see again.
I love the hope, power, and irony, that a visual art like photography can help restore someone’s sight.
Thank you for bringing the horizon into view.
Hardcover A4 portrait 124 pages. 150gsm uncoated matt stock.
